fall is for new starts

Some updates…

B is 6 months already! As cliche as it might sound, the last 6 months have flown by.

After a lot of thinking and weighing our options, I decided to not return to work and instead stay home with our little girl. It was a scary decision to make – in more ways than one – but, I’m 100% certain that I made the right choice for me, for our daughter and for our little family. I’m not sure where things will go from here. Maybe someday I’ll return to a full time job, maybe I’ll find a part time gig. Either way, I’m soaking up this time that I am so lucky and grateful to have with our girl.

Now that I’m home with a little extra time on my hands (nap time!), I am taking advantage and working on some projects that I’ve been meaning to get around to. I hope to share them here every now and again because I love being able to look back through this blog as a diary of sorts. It’s so easy to forget some of the little day to day things that happen.

Here are a few things that have been keeping me busy – aside from loving on B. 🙂

HAPPLEE –  I’m finally getting around to listing a bunch of tees in my Etsy shop. I’ve been working on taking better product photos which is definitely a slow learning process for me but they’re getting better…bit by bit.

WEDDING PROJECTS – It’s that season in our lives where there are at least a couple weddings each summer and I’ve been lucky enough to be able to help a couple friends with programs, menus, coasters, etc. for their celebrations. I’ve really loved working on these projects

EATING – I love fall especially for the FOOD. I’ve made a bunch of new recipes lately that I’m planning to add to the regular rotation this season. I’m starting a 21 day sugar detox in November to get back on track with some of my sugar cravings. Maybe I’ll post a bit on here about it.

MOVING – Aside from a walk every other day and a handful of hot yoga classes, I haven’t been getting much exercise in. When it comes down to it, sleep has been the priority but I’d really like to get back in the swing of things.

Well that’s all I can squeeze in for now. I’ve been meaning to post for a while now so I’m going ahead and publishing rather than trying to perfect this.

the little things

In some ways our wedding feels like it was forever ago but it’s actually been less than a year. I’ve been wanting to share a few of my favorite details here (better late than never!) because I really enjoyed working on them. In particular I loved designing our programs and crossword puzzle menus. I’d like to be doing more of these types of projects and a big goal for me this year is to just do it – just throw myself into projects that explore that creative side that I know I’ve got.

When it came to the look and feel for our wedding, we didn’t have any lofty goals for elegance or pizzazz but we wanted to make the day fun and full of real love. I like to think that we managed to capture some of that sparkle through the little things. My skilled sister helped me with signage, my sis-in-law made a photo collage,  I designed our menu/crossword puzzles and programs and I painted our cake toppers (Sounders scarf and all).

The buffet menu and crossword was something we wanted to include as an ice breaker for our guests. It was fun coming up with the questions and really easy to use an online puzzle generator to create the grid. The rest of it came together in Illustrator.

Mmm looking at that menu makes me want to go back and relive the whole thing.

baby “it”

pnw sunset

Happy hump day! I don’t have much other than a bunch of random thoughts today. Work has been challenging and exciting but mostly so so exhausting. I wind up coming home drained with no energy for much other than couch time. I can’t wait to put the week behind me and spend some time catching up on sleep and relaxation. Also maybe I’ll get off my booty and exercise because that has been SERIOUSLY lacking this week month.

I just realized that I never shared the news that we’re having a little GIRL! I had a feeling that it was a girl from the beginning so I wasn’t surprised at all when the sonogram print-out confirmed it. That “mother’s intuition” thing is no joke! I would have been thrilled either way but this bit of info about our baby makes it all that much more real!

In other baby related news, I read this sweet post the other day and was fighting tears. It’s mentally difficult to deal with and adjust to the physical changes that come along with pregnancy but this was a good reminder that a postpartum body is beautiful in so many ways. As a society we don’t celebrate that enough (or ever?).

Hypnobirthing classes are going really well. Sure, they get a little woo-woo at times but I can get down with woo-woo. 🙂 The “Rainbow Relaxation” audio (which is practice for getting into a relaxed state) has been knocking me out almost every night. So relaxing! With this method, there is a lot of work involved to be prepared for the big day so I need to stay on top of practicing some of the other relaxation techniques too.

I’m almost done with the Desire Map and hope to do a recap of that once I’m finished. I think it’s really helping me to narrow down on some goals (or at least key desired feelings) that I can focus on this year! For a goal junkie like me, this is exciting and interesting stuff. I don’t want to get too crazy with goals this year with the new baby on the way so this will be a perfect way to do what matters most – you know, aside from keeping another person alive.

At the beginning of the year I signed up for an awesome series of newsletters for creatives (or aspiring creatives, in my case!) through Braid Creative. One of the exercises has been to do a time audit for 4 days. A few things that I found out about my day…

  • Work accounts for much more than 8 hours a day – especially when you include commuting. I knew this already but it was kind of shocking to see it on paper.
  • I “multi-task” too often. Even watching TV often involves a little interneting on the side. I really need to get better at focusing on what’s directly in front of me.
  • A huge amount of my weekend time goes to other people. I love my family & friends but I need to get better at carving out time for things that I want to accomplish – even if that involves the couch and catching up on HIMYM.
  • I was hoping to discover pockets of time that I could be utilizing better but instead realized that I am pretty booked these days. A regular weeknight allows about for about 3 1/2 – maybe 4 hours of time for the “other category” (not including making dinner).
  • I sit a lot. To say it’s a majority of my day is an understatement. 😦 Exercise and movement is really important to me but I’m not practicing what I preach by a long shot.
  • I do however, make time for cooking quality meals which is a win in my book. Definitely something that I value.
  • Overall, I allocate a lot of my time to doing things that I don’t necessarily want to be doing. Some of that is required “adult” things but I think I could get better at incorporating working on things that I really want to accomplish – things that are on my “ideal day” list –  as well as saying NO more often (that’s a hard one for me).

I wish I could relive this day over and over again. It was so full of love.

We’re incredibly blessed to have the friends and family that we do.

Now that we’re back from our honeymoon, it’s back to normal life. Back to work tomorrow. I’m not ready.

Is anyone else ready for fall? I am.
